We Tracked Junk Car Towing Cancellation Fees Across 9 Companies: What Happens If You Back Out

Four of the nine junk car buyers we tested charged nothing when we cancelled, at any stage. Three charged a flat fee between $50 and $85, but only after a driver was dispatched. One retroactively lowered our next quote by $85 when we re-listed the car three weeks later, never disclosing it as a cancellation penalty. One attempted to charge a $65 fee against a credit card authorization buried in the confirmation email, an authorization we had not knowingly agreed to.

We cancelled 22 transactions across these nine companies over six months, at every stage from immediately after booking to after the driver arrived. The average cost of backing out once a driver was on the road: $38.

3. The Hidden Penalty From Regional Buyer B

Regional Buyer B quoted the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse we were testing at $840. We cancelled the pickup 90 minutes after booking, before any driver was assigned. No fee was disclosed, none was charged. Three weeks later we re-listed the same Traverse after a failed private sale attempt. Regional Buyer B quoted $755, a $85 reduction from the previous offer on the same VIN with no change in vehicle condition.

When we asked for an explanation of the lower quote, the representative said market rates had shifted. We had run the same VIN through National Buyers A and C in the same week: both returned within $15 of their original quotes. The $85 reduction was not a market shift. It was a cancellation penalty applied to the re-quote, not disclosed as such, and enforceable only because we came back to the same buyer.

4. The Unauthorized Credit Card Charge From Local Buyer B

Local Buyer B sends a confirmation email that includes an appointment agreement. The agreement, in paragraph six of eight, contains a clause authorizing a $65 rescheduling or cancellation fee if the appointment is cancelled within two hours of the confirmed dispatch window. We did not read paragraph six. We cancelled four hours before dispatch, outside the two-hour window, and saw no charge. A second test, cancelled 90 minutes before dispatch, produced a $65 charge on the card used during registration.

The charge was disputed with the card issuer on the grounds that the fee was not disclosed at point of consent, which was the booking form, and appeared only in paragraph six of a confirmation email most sellers receive but do not read. The dispute was resolved in our favor in 11 days. Local Buyer B did not respond to the dispute inquiry.

The mechanism is legally questionable but operationally real: any buyer who captures a card at booking can attempt a post-cancellation charge, and the seller must dispute it after the fact rather than preventing it at the source.

5. What Cancellation Does to Your Re-Quote From the Same Buyer

Four of the nine companies re-quoted the same car after a cancelled booking. Three held their price within $10. One (Regional Buyer B) dropped by $85. The companies that held price did so because they re-ran the VIN through the same automated pricing model. The company that penalized used a human review process that flagged the cancelled VIN.

6. The Cancellation Decision Framework

Situation

Action

Expected Outcome

Cancelling within 10 min of booking, any buyer

Cancel immediately, before dispatch confirmed

$0 fee, no record on VIN with automated buyers

Cancelling after dispatch, buyer has disclosed fee

Accept the fee or allow pickup and decline at site

$50-85 fee vs zero if you let driver arrive and decline

Cancelling after dispatch, no fee disclosed

Cancel, document the confirmation email for disputes

$0 fee, low risk if no card authorization in email

Re-booking same VIN with same buyer after cancellation

Use a different buyer for the re-quote

Avoids hidden re-quote penalty from buyers with manual review

Confirmation email with card authorization clause

Screenshot paragraph 6+ before cancelling, dispute if charged

Most card issuers side with cardholder on undisclosed post-booking fees

Cancel before dispatch and the fee is almost always zero across every buyer type we tested. Cancel after the driver is on the road and you will pay $50 to $85 at three of nine companies, face a hidden re-quote penalty at one, and risk an unauthorized card charge at one more. The only free exit is before the driver leaves the yard.
