Three yards require at least two wheels mounted before their tow truck operator will attempt loading. Yard 8 offered to quote if we arranged delivery on a flatbed ourselves. Yards 9 and 10 declined without conditions.

Yards that bill separately quoted higher numbers to obscure the real cost. Yard 3 quoted $270, then issued a $75 invoice within 48 hours of pickup. Yard 1 disclosed the $45 deduction upfront and the $340 net was what cleared. Ask specifically: does that quote include pickup?
4. What to Do Before Calling
Source one wheel per axle before calling yards. A used tire on a rim from a local salvage listing costs $15 to $40 each. Two wheels installed raises your eligible yard count from 7 to 10 and eliminates the $35 to $75 dolly fee. On a $200-plus vehicle, the $60 to $80 wheel investment returns $120 to $150.
If sourcing wheels is not practical, call at least 6 yards and ask each one whether pickup is included in the quoted number. Compare only all-in figures.
Verdict: Reject any quote where a separately billed dolly fee drops net payout below $150 on a vehicle the yard values above $200 in scrap. At that crossover point, sourcing two replacement wheels at $35 to $40 each costs less than the fee and opens 3 additional yard options. Call at least 6 yards; 3 of the 10 we reached refused the job outright, so volume of calls matters.
